Playing against Verulamium, whom we have always had tight games throughout the junior years, and who had beaten us by 2 points in a tight league encounter earlier in the year.
Traveling with the whole squad, including a few boys with long-term injuries, and a big family contingent the day was set up.
A tight first half saw V’s score early to take a 7-0 lead, the game then tightened up and became a nervy affair with both teams trying to get the advantage. Jake Newman got Fullers on the board in the 23rd minute with a penalty to make it a 4-point game.
Half time score 7-3 to V’s
2nd half started, with Jack Watson coming on at 8. (1 broken finger, and a glued eyebrow from a split head in the semi a week ago), he was fully strapped up!
Fullers started the 2nd half with more intensity, led by Jack W making inroads, ball in hand in traffic.
Fullers got their first try on around the 45 min mark, with a strong pick and go from the base of the scrum by Jack at 8 diving over for the try. Jake Newman thought he had kicked the conversion, but the ARs didn’t give it.
Fullers then turned the screw and their power up front had V’s in their half for most of the match, Jack W popping up again to score his 2nd try of the match to make it 13-7. It was a tense final quarter, but Fullers managed to see it out and win their first silverware as a group.
After the last 2 years and the lack of rugby opportunities, the lads have really bought in to the team this year and have reaped the rewards today.
Most of them will be going on to the Colts next year so the future looks bright!
