One hell of a down pour during the warm-up, probably better called a wet-up, ensured handling might be an issue for both teams with a sticky pitch and greasy ball but it was Ruislip shooting out of the blocks and scoring in the second minute to set up a frustrating afternoon for Fullers. The hosts continued their assault with another try down the right wing with both defenders getting stepped by the Ruislip scorer. Ruislip added a third before Dan Evans, high tackle, and Sean Deller, no wrap in the tackle were binned a minute apart five minutes from half time.
Fullerians went in 19-0 down with 13 men on the field, far from ideal.
Ruislip continued where they left off and not before long Fullers were 34-0 down and facing an embarrassing defeat.
However it’s never plain sailing in rugby!
Camped in the Ruislip 22 Fullers scrummaging dominated and Ruislip’s discipline fell apart and it was them now down to 13 following a series of penalties. Will Clark got the Fullers fight back underway scoring off the back of a scrum flopping over the line for his first of the season, Evans converted.
Andy Hovell got the next one, only seconds after returning to the field following his early substitution, with some quick feet crashing over setting up Evans for another conversion. Next over the line was Kian Russell on the right with a nice move using all of the wide pitch as the backs clicked for a training ground move, Evans slotted again.
Hovell crossing for his second saw the 4 try bonus point late on, Evans rushed the conversion with the clock running down as Fullers went in search of the losing bonus point as well or even the win but there just wasn’t enough time left as Ruislip perfectly slowed the game to their pace.
Full time 36-26
