Having won on their last two outings Fullers knew Brunel would be a tougher test especially as the last time we played them they stuck 83 points on us at their place.
It was Brunel who took the lead after a solid 20+ minutes of attack and defence from both sides as they tried to suss each other out with a score on the left hand side after Fullers committed too many players to the previous phase meaning they were well short on the overlap, conversion missed.
Fullers hit back with a nice move from a lineout and quick ball allowing Marcus Ashby to beat several defenders around the 22 to dot down, unfortunately he didn’t make the conversion.
Brunel scored again shortly afterwards and converted to lead 5-12 at the break.
Brunel then scored two more tries after the break the first coming off a rolling maul and the second from a chip over the Fullers defence and a lucky bounce of the ball allowed the rapid flyhalf to collect and score under the posts. Shortly afterwards Brunel went down a man for the last 10 minutes of the game following the dozen or so scrum penalties beforehand.
Fullers weren’t done by any stretch, Matei Albert came on for his senior debut and made an immediate impact, a near perfect line out on their 22 saw Albert peeling off the back of the rolling maul and crashing through 3 defenders to get over the line, Ashby converted.
With just a minute or so left on the clock tight head prop Lee Bass got his third of the season following another good lineout from Albert, Ashby kicked the extras and the losing bonus point was secured.
Head coach Tom Courtney said “whilst it’s hard to be happy with a defeat the performance from all 18 lads today was great, and to get a losing bonus point against Brunel is a nice present to end the year, I’m really looking forward to January and continuing our good form”.
